Government Official States MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.

He explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This wider security environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in every areas of official operations, from transport use to communication habits.
