Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
